Fernwood Weekly - Rise Above

June 21, 2026

The exterior of Fernwood Avenue Middle School on a sunny day.

Principal's Message

Dear Fernwood Families,

We have officially reached the final week of the school year! It is hard to believe how quickly the time has flown, but looking back, I am incredibly proud of everything our students, staff, and community have accomplished together.

We had a great week officially honoring and celebrating our eighth graders as they took part in their Moving Up Celebration. This is a momentous milestone, and we could not be prouder of the leadership, maturity, and talent this class has shown. We wish them nothing but the absolute best as they head off to high school!

Our 8th graders also enjoyed their picnic in the sunshine, complete with games, pizza, ice cream, and water ice! Thank you so much to our Parents Club and volunteers for making it a fantastic day!

Finally, to all of our returning families and those moving on, thank you for your partnership, support, and school spirit this year. Please take this time to relax, recharge, and make wonderful memories.

On behalf of the entire faculty and staff, we wish everyone a safe, happy, and fun-filled summer break!

Sincerely,

Frank Locantora

Tetrahedron Kite

Mrs. Hrabal’s Geometry students created a tetrahedron kite out of straws, string, and tissue paper. Several of our 8th graders had fun testing it out at our 8th grade picnic!

Wrapping Up Our Holocaust Unit

Ms. McLaughlin's 8th grade students concluded their Holocaust unit with thoughtful and creative one-pager for the autobiographical memoir, Night by Elie Wiesel. Through powerful illustrations, meaningful quotes, symbols, and written reflections, students demonstrated their understanding of the novel’s themes, characters, and historical significance. Their work showcased not only their comprehension of Elie Wiesel’s experiences but also their ability to reflect on the importance of remembrance, resilience, and the consequences of prejudice and hatred. They concluded this final project with a toast to the future and a farewell note as they head to high school in September. 🙂

Djembe Drum

Students in Ms. Blaine’s djembe drum convocation had a fantastic time exploring this West African instrument and gathering in peace. To demonstrate their new talents, several students even assisted with a musical opening for Mrs. Dilks' Latin dance group during the EOY Pep Rally!

Enzo, Ashley, Braxton, Shakira, Ben, and Jahari—WONDERFUL JOB to you all!!
