Fernwood Weekly - Rise Above

June 14, 2026

The exterior of Fernwood Avenue Middle School on a sunny day.

Principal's Message

Dear Fernwood Families,

We just wrapped up a fantastic week, filled with traditions, events, and school spirit.

Here is a look at our recent highlights:

  • 6th Grade Greek Olympics: Our sixth graders gave some wonderful social studies presentations and then headed outside for some teamwork and athletic activities.

  • End-of-Year Pep Rally: We turned up the volume! We came together as a whole school to celebrate our students' hard work, achievements, and resilience this year. It was an afternoon of high energy, fun games, and a lot of school pride.

  • 8th Grade Dance: A beautiful, bittersweet milestone. We are so excited to celebrate our eighth graders as they prepare to take their next big step into high school. It promises to be an unforgettable night of dancing, laughter, and celebrating an incredible group of students.

Thank you to all the staff, parents, and volunteers who worked so hard behind the scenes to make these events happen!

Sincerely,

Frank Locantora

Let's Make a Zoo!

Ms. Modesto's, Ms. Sutley's, Ms. Marcus's, and Mrs. Fuller's 7th grade math students found the area and perimeter of exhibits and features to construct their own zoos! The students showcased their creativity and dedication with their end of the year projects.

Have a great weekend, the two of you!

Museum of Living Things

6th grade science students transformed our library into a Museum of Living Things this past week! Each student chose a living thing and created an exhibit of their choice to apply and present what they learned about the biosphere and their chosen organism. They all worked really hard and did a great job presenting to other 6th graders that visited our museum!

Geometry Capstone Projects

Mrs. Hrabal's 8th grade Geometry students completed and presented their final Capstone Projects.

1. Bridge Project: Students researched different types of bridges and a civil engineers role in bridge construction. Then they created their own bridge out of popsicle sticks that was required to hold at least 35 pounds. Students far exceeded the expectations. One bridge held 180 pounds and we were still unable to break it! Great job Amir, RJ, Ivan, Luciano, Dexter, Joe, Kayden, Ayush, and Lilly!

2. Architect Floor Plan Project: Students created their own floor plan of their dream home using a digital floor plan creator. They calculated the square footage of their homes, cost of appliances, furniture, and decorations. Great job Reagan, Lyndsey, and Ivannah!

3. Mousetrap Car: Students created their own mousetrap car and calculated the average speed of their car in feet/second and miles/hour. They also graphed the car's distance over specific time intervals and found the line of best fit. Their mousetrap car went 27 feet! Great job Noah, Darren, and Juan!

4. Fibonacci Sequence Project: This student researched Fibonacci sequences and the Fibonacci spiral. They studied the history of Fibonacci sequences and where they come up in real life. Then they created their very own piece of Fibonacci artwork! Great job Dante!

Annual 6th Grade Greek Olympics

The 6th Graders had their Greek Olympics this week. Congrats to all the teams who worked so hard and did such a great job at the opening ceremonies in the auditorium. We also had some amazing sportsmanship when we were outside participating in our Olympic events.

“How do you want to be remembered at Fernwood?

During their 6th grade year, Mrs. Poupard and Mrs. Dragovits led a meaningful lesson centered on the question, “How do you want to be remembered at Fernwood? What will your legacy be?” As part of this activity, students created painted canvas tiles featuring a word or phrase that reflected the values and character they hoped to embody throughout their middle school experience.

This week, during lunch, students were reunited with their artwork as a reminder of their growth and journey. We are proud of all they have accomplished and wish our 8th graders the very best of luck in their future endeavors.
