Week of May 10, 2026

Principal's Message

Dear Fernwood Families,

What a whirlwind of a week! It’s been great to see our school community so engaged, from academic deep dives to sweet Friday treats. Here is a recap of the highlights that made this week so special:

Spring Fest & Boosterthon Success
We officially wrapped up our Boosterthon with a high-energy Spring Fest! I want to extend a big thank you to all our families for your incredible generosity. Your donations directly support our students and programs, and we couldn't do it without your partnership.

Celebrating Excellence
It was a proud night at the Board of Education meeting as we officially honored our standout staff members. Please join me in congratulating:
  • Rosie Carey: Teacher of the Year
  • Miguel Crespo: Educational Services Professional of the Year
Their dedication to our students is truly the heart of our school.

Global Perspectives & History
Our students engaged in some truly immersive learning this week. Our Grade 8 students had the honor of hearing from a Holocaust Speaker, offering them a vital and moving connection to history.

Our world language department hosted a charming French Cafe, where students practiced their conversational skills over some "petit" treats.

Music & Milestones
The Middle School Choir Concert was a wonderful night. The talent on display was a testament to our students' hard work and the guidance of our music department.

To celebrate a successful week, we surprised the students with ice cream trucks during lunches today! It was the perfect way to kick off the weekend and reward everyone for their focus and effort.

Thank you for your continued support in making our school such a vibrant place to learn and grow.

P.S. Families of 8th grade parents:

If you would like to share any memory videos or pictures of your child for their 8th grade video, please send them to Mrs. Howell via email (howellm@eht.k12.nj.us) and label them "8th grade video" and your child's name. All photos/videos need to be in by June 10th.

Sincerely,

Frank Locantora

Voices of the Holocaust

This week, Mrs. Vanderheyden's 8th grade students continued their Voices of the Holocaust unit by exploring the writings and experiences of Holocaust survivor Sonia Weitz. Students began with a video testimony in which Sonia shared her personal experiences and recited one of her poems. They then read, discussed, and responded to three of her poems along with an excerpt from her memoir, synthesizing ideas across texts and making meaningful connections to the previously read graphic novel Maus I. To conclude the week, students participated in a concentric circle discussion, sharing their perspectives and key takeaways from Sonia’s story with their classmates.

French Cafe

What a magnifique Thursday we had at our French Café event! It was wonderful to see so many of our students and families come together to celebrate language and culture.

The day was filled with delicious treats, students seating and serving guests in French, and explaining what it is like to take French at Fernwood. It was a chance to see how learning a new language opens up a whole world of opportunities and perspectives.

A huge merci beaucoup to our dedicated French teacher, Madame Baird and all the volunteers who made this event such a success! We can’t wait to see our rising students in the classroom next year.
