Fernwood Weekly - Rise Above

Week of March 15, 2026

The exterior of Fernwood Avenue Middle School on a sunny day.

Principal's Message

Dear Fernwood Families,

It’s been a great week here at the school! Between the sea of green in our hallways and the high energy in the gym, the spirit of our community is showing as we head into the final stretch before Spring Break.

I want to take a moment to give a huge shout-out to our latest Eagle Achievers! These students have been soaring lately, showing incredible dedication to their academics and setting a fantastic example with their positive behavior. Congratulations to all our honorees!

Our volleyball season is officially underway. Our athletes have been working hard at practice, and the energy during our first few matches has been fantastic.

Next week, we are digging into some great reads with our annual Spring Book Fair. It’s the perfect time for students to grab a few new titles to enjoy over the break. On March 27th, we will hold our March Madness Volleyball tournament from 5:30-8:30 in the FMS gym.

Let’s finish this month strong!

Sincerely,

Frank Locantora

Pi Day Festivities

On March 13th, the 6th grade students continued the long-standing tradition of celebrating Pi Day at Fernwood.

In the first event, the Pi Plate Assembly was completed in 1 minute and 12 seconds, as Mrs. Kraybill’s team took first place.

Then, the students took part in a grade-wide Blooket to test their knowledge of Trivia about Pi, and representing Mr. Goodwin’s team, Derrek Caez took home first place.

In the Frisbee Catch, Mrs. Kraybill’s team took first place with Mrs. Urso doing the catching as they faced Mr. Goodwin’s team with Mr. Rupp as the catcher in the final.
In the popular Pi(e) Eating Contest, Myles Ray-Garcia completed his pie first and took home first place for Mr. Reid’s team.

Students were recognized for their memorization of Pi as a team. With a total of 91 points, Mr. Goodwin’s team took home 1st place, Mrs. Kraybill’s team scored 85 points, and Mr. Reid’s class had 38 points.

Congratulations to Zeke Tewasiliig, who was crowned Pi Day King for memorizing an impressive 401 digits of pi! Joining Zeke (Team Goodwin) on the Pi Day Court were Saabira Hossiain (Team Goodwin), who memorized 188 digits, and Jesi Baez (Team Kraybill), who recited 161 digits.

In the final event of the day, Pi Bullseye was conducted and after 2 rounds, all the teams were tied. So, a Pi Day first occurred as the math teachers competed to break the tie. To break the tie, Mr. Goodwin nailed his throw and took home first place.

Congratulations to all the 6th graders that competed in the Pi Day Festivities and Congratulations to Team Goodwin for their victory in the competition.

Agree/Disagree in Spanish

Students in 7th-grade Honors developed their ability to express agreement and disagreement with their classmates’ likes and dislikes. Each student created a poster featuring a sentence about how they prefer to spend their free time. Classmates then participated in an interactive gallery walk, thoughtfully responding to each statement by indicating whether they agreed or disagreed.
