Fernwood Weekly - Rise Above

Week of February 8, 2026

The exterior of Fernwood Avenue Middle School on a sunny day.

Principal's Message

Dear Fernwood Families,

It’s been a crazy week here at Fernwood (the good kind)! Here is a quick look at the highlights:

Strength and Spirit: A Week Recap
  • The Resiliency Assembly: Our students engaged in a powerful session about developing a growth mindset and the "bounce-back" factor. It was inspiring to see them lean into the idea that challenges aren't roadblocks, but stepping stones.
  • The Pep Rally: Our school spirit was at an all-time high as we celebrated our teams and our student achievement.
  • The Sweetheart Dance: Tonight we will cap off the week with our the Sweetheart Dance. A huge thank you to the staff and volunteers who are transforming the Cafeteria and making sure the night goes smoothly!
.
Thank you for your support in making these experiences possible for our students!

Sincerely,

Frank Locantora

Undefeated!

Congratulations to the girl's basketball team on an undefeated season! Without the team play, poise, and willingness to try new defensive and offensive sets, this never would have been possible. Each game brought forth different girls bringing something pivotal to the win. Special thanks to all of our managers as well! Amazing season girls!!

Boys’ Basketball Team Takes Their Final Ride 🏀

On February 5th, our boys’ basketball team celebrated their 8th graders during their final home game at Fernwood. While wins and losses are part of the game, this team measures success a little differently — it’s all about the ride. And what a ride it’s been!

This group has shown heart, growth, teamwork, and resilience all season long, making memories that will last far beyond the final buzzer.

Congratulations to (left to right): Hezekiah Edwards, Julian Robles, Andrew Moncrieffe, Corey Brown, Coach Chini, Coach Goodwin, Tahshin Shayan, Eason Lassiter, Grayson Biddle, and Jaden Mpofu.

To our 8th graders — good luck in your future endeavors. May you keep chasing your goals and enjoying the journey along the way!

Checkmate!

Mr. Goodwin’s Convocation Class has been sharpening their strategic skills through chess as their chosen activity this term. After weeks of learning, practicing, and studying the game, students put their skills to the test in last week’s 1st Annual Chess Tournament to determine the class champion.

After battling their way through a competitive bracket, Sean Printz and Cash Blevin advanced to the championship match. The final round was intense, with both players carefully calculating moves and trading pieces in a tense showdown.

In a surprising turn of events, Cash executed a brilliant move that placed Sean in checkmate, securing the victory and claiming the title.

Congratulations to Cash Blevin, our 1st Annual Chess Champion! Well done to all participants for their focus, sportsmanship, and strategic thinking throughout the tournament.

Probability Experiments

Mrs. Hrabal's Pre-Algebra students created their own probability experiments this week! They predicted the outcomes and then recorded 100 trials to make comparisons between the theoretical and experimental probabilities.
