NJHS is a service organization. Throughout the year, members help with many school activities and district activities. Each day the members are responsible for the opening exercises during morning homeroom, and they collect the attendance folders and deliver them to the attendance office. In addition, the members act as guides during new student orientation and Back to School Night.Besides assisting at the Fernwood Avenue Middle School, the members have assisted with Fun Days and Read Across America for many years at Slaybaugh School and Swift School, and they have tutored the elementary students when asked.

In order to be eligible for membership, a student must have a cumulative average of 92 or higher for the first 3 marking periods in Math, Social Studies, English, Science, Foreign Language, and all Special Area subjects. A candidate must also have good attendance, no discipline record, at least one school activity or a community service activity, and eight Fernwood Avenue Middle School teacher recommendations. If the student meets all of these qualifications, he or she would be invited to the induction ceremony in the spring.

The NJHS Induction Ceremony for the 2018 - 2019 school year will be on Thursday, May 30, 2019. The ceremony will be held in the Fernwood Avenue Middle School auditorium.

Congratulations to the new members for maintaining high standards for the school year 2018 - 2019, and to the current members for maintaining the high standards for two school years!
